How Does a Regenerative Blower Work

Blades passing the inlet draw air into the blower. Centrifugal action accelerates the air outward and forward. The ring-shaped housing turns the air back toward the next blade, where it is accelerated again. Each pass, each regeneration, adds pressure. Near the outlet, a narrowed section called the stripper separates the air from the circulating path and directs it out of the blower.

Pressure or vacuum from the same basic machine

Connect the system to the discharge and the blower supplies pressure. Connect the system to the inlet and the blower creates vacuum. Pressure and vacuum performance differ, which is why manufacturer curves publish separate operating lines for each.

Why the airflow is oil-free

The impeller runs with a designed clearance and does not contact the housing, so nothing in the air path requires lubrication. That is what makes the technology useful wherever oil contamination in the airstream is unacceptable.

What protects the blower

Inlet filtration keeps debris out of the impeller. A relief valve prevents system restriction from driving the blower past its pressure or vacuum limit, which is a common cause of overheating. On pressure systems, the manufacturer specifies metal pipe for the first five to eight feet from the discharge flange to avoid heat distortion.
